I’ve always dreamed big. Through persistence and too many fishnets and auditions to count, I’m proud to say I’ve done very well in the industry. I have a few more things on the ol bucket list I’d like to tackle but that’s why I’ve moved back to Edmonton and created DLDC and DREALEE | Fitness + Dance.
I’ve had the opportunity to train and work in Edmonton, Vancouver, Las Vegas and LA.
Yes, Las Vegas is on the list. And no, I was not a stripper.
I get asked all the time, “How in the heck did you live there?”
Well, I lived there just like any other resident in Las Vegas – as far away from the strip as possible. And yes, there are schools and freeways just like any other city. One of my favourite things about Vegas is that almost everything is open 24 hours a day. After a night out on the town, you can still hit up the grocery store in your red bottoms.
Another perk is working in the entertainment industry. I’ve met so many talented entertainers who are now some of my best friends. From working at Tao Nightclub to performing at 3 Grammy Awards shows, I’ve had countless awesome experiences.
One of my favourite performances was dancing for Michael Jackson’s movie premiere. We performed Thriller for his family and friends. I remember as if it were yesterday. The music blasted from the speakers. My heart pounded in my chest. The base pumped under my feet and trickled up through the rest of my body. My mom and sister were in the front row beaming up at me, faces full with pride.
I’ll never forget that first foot stomp and head knock to the left. My eyes immediately filled up with tears.
I’ve made it, I thought.
And then I KILLED THE CHOREOGRAPHY. Sure an oxygen tank would have been handy for after the performance but hey, a lesson learned for the next super awesome experience.
After working many corporate gigs, day clubs, night clubs, America’s Got Talent and choreographing for the NBA, I decided I have outgrown Vegas. There is still plenty of work for dancers but I no longer found a lot of the work fulfilling.
I felt stagnant.
I also gravitated more towards the choreographer and director role. So, off to LA I went.
LA is a different beast. Places aren’t open 24 hours a day. No after hours grocery shopping in red bottoms there.
And I hope you like car rides. The TRAFFIC! Everyone and their grandma moves to LA to act, sing, dance, twerk, baton twirl, yodel, you name it.
Nearly every dancer I met worked in a restaurant. I DIDN'T WANT TO DO THAT.
I was fortunate to have discovered the Tracy Anderson Method. Tracy is a celebrity fitness trainer. Her workout is HARD. I nearly DIED in my first mat class/audition. A celebrity had her mat placed next to mine.
We both looked at each other and were like, “WTF is this?”
Sweat poured into my eyeballs. Waterproof mascara would have been the way to go here.
And then I was hooked.
I wanted to throw up every now and then in training but I absolutely loved the challenge. However, I wasn’t involved in the dance scene as much and decided I wanted to start my dance company.NOW.
And where else would be a better place than back home?
So here I am back in Edmonton. And I get asked again, “How in the heck do you live here?”
Yes,it’s a slight transition and a bit of a culture shock but I couldn’t be happier. Do I miss access to the beach? Yes. Do I miss beautiful weather year round? No, I prefer scraping frost off my car windows and freezing my tail off in winter. Yeah right. Of course I miss the weather. It’s awesome! Do I miss not having my family around? NOT A CHANCE.
I love the progress of DLDC.
The senior team went to Las Vegas and shared the stage at an industry event with other professional dancers from shows such as Le Reve and Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil.
In Summer 2018, DLDC will be travelling to LA!
